How it works

01

Enter current shot time and target extraction time.

Input your live shot data and the time target you are working toward. Both values inform the grind delta.

02

Calculate grind click adjustment and direction.

The calculator converts time difference to click count and specifies whether to move finer or coarser.

03

Verify water chemistry against SCA brewing water guidelines.

Use the Water Hardness tool to confirm your water parameters support the extraction you are targeting.

Frequently asked questions

What is a click on a grinder?

One indexed stop on an adjustable-grind burr grinder. The time change per click varies by grinder — calibrate with your own equipment.

What is the SCA water guideline?

The Specialty Coffee Association publishes target ranges for brewing water chemistry to ensure optimal extraction.

Does water hardness affect espresso taste?

Yes. Calcium assists extraction but excess causes scale. Magnesium enhances brightness. Bicarbonate buffers pH.

Can I use RO water for espresso?

Straight RO water (zero minerals) corrodes boilers and extracts poorly. Remineralise to SCA targets.

Does the grind calculator account for tamping pressure?

No. It assumes consistent tamping at 15–20 kg. Inconsistent tamp pressure overrides grind adjustment.
